Periodontal Disease (or Gum Disease) is an inflammatory disease caused by bacterial infections.
The most prominent cause of tooth loss in adults, Gum Disease attacks the gums, bones and other supporting structures of the teeth. Although this is a serious condition, Gum Disease may be cured through exceptional dental hygiene and treatment. Gum Disease is the result of plaque (colorless bacteria that forms on teeth). If plaque is not brushed away, gums begin to slip downward away from teeth. This movement creates pockets in between teeth and gums, which eventually fill with plaque and causes further deterioration.
