Wisdom teeth are the third molars which usually appear between the ages of 17 and 24.
Wisdom teeth may need to be extracted if they are “coming in sideways” or “impacted". In dental terminology an "impacted tooth" refers to a tooth that has failed to emerge fully into its expected position. This failure to erupt properly may occur either because there is not enough room in the jaw for the tooth, or because of its abnormal position.
Some of the problems associated with impacted wisdom teeth include:
- Bacteria and plaque build-up
- Cyst development (a fluid- filled sac)
- Tumor development
- Infection
- Jaw and Gum Disease
- Decay of adjacent teeth
If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, please make an appointment as soon as possible:
- Intense pain and soreness in the mouth ,possibly radiating to the ear and/or throat
- Infection in the mouth
- Facial swelling
- Swelling of the gumline in the back of the mouth
Many oral health specialists will recommend the removal of wisdom teeth, as early extraction will help to eliminate problems which may develop over time. Third molar impaction is the most prevalent medical developmental disorder.
