Children’s Dentistry

Divine Smiles warmly welcomes people of all ages, but we especially love to see young children. Good dental care is vital for the entire family and should begin while a child is still very young. It is far better for a child to see us from an early age than wait until a dental problem develops. We want to ensure every dental visit is a positive experience, rather than introducing them to a dental practice when they may be in discomfort or pain.

When Should My Child See a Dentist?

You can book your child’s very first dental visit soon after they get their first tooth, so we can check to ensure their teeth and jaws are developing correctly. During this initial appointment, we can talk to you about how best to look after your child’s brand-new teeth, demonstrating how to clean them and discussing which toothbrush and toothpaste to use. Just like adults, children need to follow a routine of having their teeth brushed twice daily, and when their teeth begin to contact each other, you will need to begin flossing between them.

From age three onwards, we will need to see your child regularly for checkups and cleans. Their very first appointment is a simple introduction to our practice, so we will show them some of the tools we use, and they will get a ride in the dental chair while we count their teeth and check their oral health. Once we have assessed your child’s health, we can recommend a suitable preventative dental care routine, including professional dental care and oral care at home. We aim to ensure your child enjoys strong and healthy baby teeth, setting the scene for healthy adult tooth development.

Why Are Baby Teeth Important?

Some people assume the baby teeth are not especially important because they fall out after a few years. However, your child’s baby teeth are vital for their growth and development. Baby teeth enable a child to eat a nutritious diet comfortably and without pain, and they are essential for learning to speak clearly. These teeth help to hold open enough space for adult teeth, so the adult teeth are able to come through in the proper positions and the correct alignment. Without proper care, baby teeth can become decayed and infected, causing pain.

Children’s baby teeth can become infected and decayed in the same way as in adults, usually because of poor oral care. Sending a child to sleep with a bottle of sugary juice or milk can also cause cavities. A severe infection in the baby tooth may affect the development of the adult tooth underneath.

Our preventative dentistry treatments for children include fissure sealants.

What are Fissure Sealants?

Fissure sealants are usually applied to a child’s adult back teeth soon after they erupt. These chewing surfaces contain many grooves and fissures and can easily trap bacteria and food and are more at risk of cavities. Fissure sealants are made from flowable plastic which creates a thin, protective coating over the chewing surfaces.

We simply paint the sealant onto clean chewing surfaces where it quickly hardens, and treatment is quick, painless and non-invasive. Sometimes we may recommend using fissure sealants to protect a child’s baby back teeth if we feel there is a higher risk of cavities in these teeth.
